Witchdoktor: A box pressed cigar with a wonderful oily wrapper!
Well, I haven't been posting, but I have been smoking. And of course, I've been thinking. Lots of thinking during this bizarre year of 2020. Does anyone even remember the fires in Australia?
Today I smoked the Witchdoktor made by the master AJ Fernandez at his famous farm in Estelí.
That being said, slow your roll. Let's just say, that I smoked it a little too enthusiastically i.e. quickly and got a bit of a buzz. I'm sitting in my living room in a comfortable 72 degrees and am feeling the effects.
Now, living through a pandemic and seeing so much death and tragedy, I see things very differently. Healthcare indeed needs to be universal and healthcare should not be tied to employment.

This classic and approachable cigar has a Sumatra wrapper with Nicaragua binder and filler. The wrapper is a dark and oily Ecuadorian Oscuro wrapper and is very pleasant.
The flavor and smell is wonderful and has hints of leather, coffee and spice.
Thoughts
Firstly, I should say slow down. I very much enjoyed this cigar. Finally, a cigar with a spicy oily wrapper that I love and visually, the Witchdoktor is a very approachable cigar.
That being said, slow your roll. Let's just say, that I smoked it a little too enthusiastically i.e. quickly and got a bit of a buzz. I'm sitting in my living room in a comfortable 72 degrees and am feeling the effects.
The first third was perfect and cool, however during the second third the cherry wandered and yes it became crookedly lit and ultimately went out. I lightly scraped out the black, snipped the cigar straight and re-lit.
The final third was quite strong and amazing. I smoked this third too quickly and oddly have a bit of an after buzz to include a slightly upset stomach and cold sweats.
To much of a good thing is simply too much. The key to enjoying a cigar is patience and tempo. Smoking too fast causes heat and a acrid smokey aftertaste. To slow, which is the better of the two cases in my opinion, often causes the cigar to go out.

Again, what a crazy year, 2020.
My memory of this years starts with the fires in Australia, then COVID19 in China, then Italy, and before we know it a global Pandemic affecting everyone. Enter the death of George Floyd, the protests, the violent demonstrations, and the lives-matter debate that is adding fuel to a bonfire of epic proportions.
In all of this, I have grown. Do you remember when President Obama passed into law universal healthcare? I do. I remember being angry. I remember feeling disgruntled that people were being forced in some way to get healthcare and that citizens were somehow losing a freedom of choice. Even if that choice was to go without something as beneficial as health insurance.
Now, living through a pandemic and seeing so much death and tragedy, I see things very differently. Healthcare indeed needs to be universal and healthcare should not be tied to employment.
How many Americans are now suffering with healthcare bills in the tens of thousand and even higher? There lives were shut down by government decree. Businesses were shut down across the nation while essential work was allowed to continue. Thousands of people were laid off, let go, and furloughed.
And what were they left with? Well, not healthcare. Healthcare is tied to the job!
In the light of the last few months a universal healthcare systems doesn't seem so bad now.
I won't go into the other issues we're also going through except to say that they are real, they are important, and they are nuanced. I truly hope that some good can come out of the difficulties we are all facing this year.
May more people be kind and genuine towards others. May all of us seek meaningful and positive interactions with eachother.
